I love gorillas. Always have. I'm not an evolutionist so it's not that I'm endeared to them as any kind of distant relative. My love affair with gorillas started when I went to the zoo as a young child and saw the primate exhibit. I was fascinated with the gorillas...they way they moved, the way their eyes looked around with such understanding, the way they interacted with each other. I remember going to the Calgary Zoo as an adult and seeing the gorillas. I didn't want to leave... they were so fascinating. It was so busy that day and everyone was pointing and laughing at these big creatures. All of a sudden, one of the male gorillas got sick and tired of being on display. He rushed the window and pounded his fists against it. And then, just as quickly, he went back to grooming his pal. It was an amazing display of power and it is etched in my memory. My husband laughs about my gorilla obsession. I don't tell many people about it because frankly, it's a bit weird! One of my favourite children's authors is Anthony Browne. He's British. He loves gorillas too and his storybooks typically feature them. One of my favourites is "Gorilla". I also love "Willy the Wimp".
