Yesterday was concert day. Both girls had their long awaited school concerts on the same day. The preschool one cracked me up. Preschoolers have no inhibitions or sense of being on stage. They either sing really loud or stand there and pick their nose. Some look shell shocked, other wave furiously at mom or dad. The teachers, bless their hearts, remained enthusiastic and kept the songs going! We, of course, all burst in to loud applause at the end of each song. They had made little kazoos and hummed We wish you a merry Christmas at the end...very cute!
Maddie's school concert was amazing. The music teacher put on a showstopper! Amazingly for a public school the theme was Rejoicing! The first two songs were centred on the birth of Christ. There was a cool African carol called Sing Noel played on the orff instruments while the music teacher played the bongos. One of the classes did a dance routine to "I've Got the Music in Me" They were all waiting at a a bus stop and started dancing. It was pretty fun. For the finale, the school choir sang a song called Jubilant Song and all the kids had ribbons on sticks that they swirled around. It was so effective. Mike and I have prayed very hard for our girls' public school experience. It was a choice we made to send them to the neighbourhood school - a difficult choice to send them into the world at such a tender age. So far, God has been faithful with a nurturing, loving kindergarten teacher and a supportive school. Yesterday was like the icing on the cake. In such a multicultural neighbourhood, I didn't have any expectations for the concert. I was fully expecting a "Winter Fest". What a surprise! I, of course, have written a lovely card to the staff expressing our appreciation and support for such a wonderful concert.
Seeing little children rejoice is such a blessing to me. A picture burned into my mind is a little Sikh boy with his topknot singing about the birth of our Saviour with great enthusiasm! He likely had no idea what he was singing about. He'll never know how much that blessed my heart.
Rejoice like a child this season. It's good for the soul!

I now have the picture of the Sikh boy singing about Jesus in my head and a lump in my throat to go along with it... Irvine had a good Christmas concert too. "Jesus we remember, this your birthday!"
