The Other Side

My Uncle passed away. It was what we prayed for...a quick and peaceful exit from this world with his family all around him. He had a stroke and then in a few hours he simply stopped breathing as he lay unconscious. My cousins and my aunt were just about to hoist him up as he had slipped down a little on the bed. They all grabbed a corner of the sheets and went to lift him when he passed on surrounded by those who loved him most.

He said he wasn't afraid to die. He knew God was waiting to take him home. He said he was sobered a little to think he would be required to give an account of his life. I guess that's a sobering thought for any of us.

He's now free of pain and with the God he so faithfully served. We differed on many theological, political and social ideas, but I know he had a firm foundation he lived on. His words were not always gentle, but his actions showed his true character.

Good bye Uncle Euel. We'll all miss your mini-sermons, your "daddy talk" and your deep southern accent. We'll miss your love for a bargain, your amazing ability to fix anything and those blue eyes looking over your black military glasses.

It's hard to see a family member leave this world. What amazing hope that we'll see them all again on the other side.

I'm sorry for you loss Heather. It's tough when death happens at times when we are supposed to be so focused on joy. Death is mysterious for the Christian; we know that heaven and peace await us, yet we want to go on living, unsure of how that is possible apart from this earth. I'll pray for you...
