An unwelcome guest snuck into our house along with the new year......the strep throat bug. Poor Chelsea was struck down Monday with a fever and swollen tonsils. By Monday night, I knew we were dealing with something more than a cold. The dr. confirmed Tuesday that indeed, she did need antibiotics. When she asked me about allergies, I realized Chelsea had never had antibiotics. So, it was with a little nervousness that I poured her first dose of penicillin. I don't know if it's genetic, but I broke out in hives, the first time I took the stuff. I shouldn't have worried about that. It never crossed my mind that it would taste terrible. I guess I presumed it would taste like Chilren's Tylenol....my kids slurp that back with glee. The first time the liquid touched her tongue, she gagged and panicked. Then came the tantrum. She would not drink it....no way. Somehow with a little trickery, I got that first dose into her. Great, I thought, only 10 more days of this.
Yesterday, she managed to get it down by following it with a swig of Gatorade following close behind. She was quite proud of her accomplishment. Today, however, we are back to tears and tantrums about getting it down. I bought her Kool Aid jammers as a chaser, but even that is not quite masking the taste.
Taking medecine is just one of the things she's going to have to put up with in life. There's lots of unpleasant things we just need to do and get it over with.... Here are the life lessons we're learning from bad tasting penicillin...
Just do it...whatever it is.....all the fussing and complaining just prolongs the inevitable.
Something sweet always helps us stomach the unpleasant
A little bad tasting medecine for a short time, although hard to take, builds health and wellness
I think the next 9 days will be long ones, judging by how this mid day dose is going down!
