Today the Learning Assistance teacher was showing a student teacher the "Explode the Code" books (phonics based program). This year the students have their own copies to write in. She was telling us that no matter how many times she corrects them, they insist on calling them their math books. I guess the only workbooks they've ever experienced are "math" ones. Too funny. The other funny thing we were talking about is that the little ones that go for extra help call it "ESL" even if they are English speaking. Just the other day one of my grade 2s, who goes for reading help and has never spoken any other language asked if it was time for ESL.
My kids at school always humble me. Like today. We're going on a field trip in a week to hear the Vancouver Symphony Elementary School Kids Conert. I've been doing lots of prep work to get them ready. We've read books, talked and looked at posters and cards of all the instrument families. We talked about some of the composers and I was feeling like they were pretty well prepared. So today during art, I say, " Let's listen to the Vancouver Symphony CD while we do our art." One of my gems blurts out, "What is a symphony?" Aaaahhhhh!
