It's Like Riding a Bike....but faster!

I can still ski. That's good news. I grew up on skis, riding the chairlift
and skiing the waist deep powder with my ski patrol dad at 3 years old. I learned my ABCs riding the chairlift up Red Mountain and even jumped off the lift once into a snowbank. But, that's a long story for another time! I was never a great skiier. I think my careful, non-risk taking personality didn't allow for me to progress past a certain point!! Most of my peers on the hill were "hot doggers" or racers. I was pretty happy to stick with the gentle slopes and weave my way down the way my dad taught me.

I skiied a little as a teenager, even less once I was in university and then of course with pregnancies and little ones, I just never made it to the hill.

I did, however, want the kids to at least know how to ski a little. Maddie jumped at the opportunity so I signed her up for Spring Break ski camp. Chelsea was really reluctant, so she decided to "watch" and then decide. On Friday, with Mike being off we decided to pull out our 12 year old equipment and join Maddie on the slopes. Parents can ski for $20 while their kids are in lessons, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity. I was pretty worried as I buckled up my boots and snapped them into the bindings. After the first few turns, it all came back to me and I had a wonderful time down that first hill. Mike followed close behind and pretty soon we had done 5 or 6 runs. It was a beautiful day with fresh snow, sunshine and a view of the city. I think I might be hoooked.

It's funny now that I'm older. I don't care that my skis are old and my boots are white with lilac accents! There were all kinds at the hill, from very cool snowboarders to vintage skiiers like myself! There is a kind of comaraderie at the ski hill that I forgot about. It's very nice. Maybe it's different at Whistler or the other big mountains but this was just right for me. We stuck to the green and blue runs yesterday. I knew my muscles would thank me for that. I feel them a little today, but not as bad as I thought.

We definitely have to get Chelsea going now. Even if we only go a few times a year, I can't let that many years go past again without a mountain fix.
