I have a funny recollection of Remembrance Day. In grade 10 our English teacher asked for a volunteer to read In Flanders' Fields over the PA. My good friend Heather volunteered me - she loved volunteering me. I practised and practised the poem until I could read it with the right expression and fluency. On the 10th of November I stood in the little closet where the PA system was. Mr. House our principal asked me to move over because Graeme, a fellow student, was going to play the pipes. So there I stood in this tiny little room with the bagpipes bellowing into my ears. By the time he was finished and it was my turn, my ears were ringing. I hope the poem sounded OK because honestly, I couldn't hear myself speak. My friend Heather still laughs about that.
I also remember getting poppies in elementary school and making lips out of them even though it was strictly forbidden.
Take time today to remember those who died for our freedom. We live in an amazing country.
