Connected...

So, this past week I discovered "Facebook". It's been very intriguing to me. Most of my peers (us 30 somethings...quickly approaching 40) don't even know what facebook is. I've discovered this as I've talked with people at work and in the neighbourhood. Mostly, I'm met with a blank look...."facebook? what's that?" In fact, as I searched Facebook to find old high school friends, I found roughly......4 or 5 in total. Clearly, I am too old for this.

In complete contrast, my nieces and nephews, who are all 20 somethings, are connected on facebook. One of my nieces has 167 friends. The others have similar numbers....fascinating. This new generation (I can't believe I'm using that term...man, I feel old today) is completely connected. I can't even imagine how they have time to be so connected. Mike and I were wondering how university students these days get any studying done with cell phones, MSNing and facebooking, not to mention blogging and emailing? I used to spend lots of time on the phone...maybe no one uses that technology anymore?

Anyway, I feel as though I've got to keep up somewhat so I know what my girls will be doing with technology in a few years. Our new principal, who is very tech-saavy and a young dad, is on facebook. He told us that at our first meeting with him. (Again, one person on our staff, a young teacher, knew what he was talking about.) Well, anyhow, he puts on seminars on knowing what your kids are doing online so I think he will be a great person to work with.

For now, I'll play around with facebook, but honestly, answering emails and updating this blog is about all I can manage right now. I am on my way out right now to have dinner with my high school friends....we're going to connect over dinner and have a real live conversation....hey, what a novel idea!!!

Ian and I are on Facebook too, I tried looking you up upon reading this post but there are a LOT of Heather Davis' and it is late so I didn't look through them all to find you. Ian and I are much easier to find so next time you are on it you want you can look us up, then you can work at getting your own 160 +++ friends. ;)

I'm with you on the notion of being too old for Facebook. Most of the people I know on there are the kids I used to work with as a Youth Worker! I did get in touch with a high school buddy which is nice. Our young people have too much technology. Michael hasn't gotten this savvy yet - at least I'm still ahead of him.
