So, Disney has done it again. Ok, I admit, I'm really behind the times if I'm just being introduced to "High School Musical" now that High School Musical 2 aired this past summer and # 3 is rumoured to be in the works. Did you know that High School Musical 2 which aired on Disney Channel August 17th was the most-watched basic cable telecast of all time. Yes, Disney knows how to market.
My girls had mentioned this phenomena last year from time to time, having been introduced to it by their friends. I didn't really pay much attention and said no when they asked me to rent it at Rogers. They didn't protest but were thrilled when their friend brought it along on a playdate. I watched a little with them and I actually quite enjoyed the music and simple plot.
When looking for a DVD to play in the van on the way home from Summerland, we chanced upon a sale for the coveted High School Musical. It was a good investment and kept them entertained all the way home. Now, we've watched it a few times together and even got Dad to watch a little. The music is pretty upbeat and the theme is a noble one, even if it is far fetched and simple.
So, although I would rather they were still watching Dora and the gang, I guess their tastes are maturing and evolving. It's inevitable that pop culture is going to be a part of our household. My goal is to keep it in balance with our faith and to keep the lines of communication open. In the van tonight we talked about how Sharpay (one of the characters) is given everything she wants and that makes her a not-so-nice friend. We also talked about how it can be "cool" to be smart like Gabriella.
The girls are in a funny in between stage right now. They are wanting to watch new, hip shows on the Family Channel but many times this summer I was making breakfast to the sounds of Little Einsteins or Backyardigans. They have a sister bond and won't admit to friends they watch, and perhaps even enjoy these shows. Oh, if only we could hold onto their innocence. The growing up is inevitable and one day, even High School Musical will be "babyish".

Hey Heather, just wanted to let you know that we love High School Musical... but I did watch the 2nd one with Leah and it was WAY WAY WAY too old for her. The first one was easy to talk about how not to act like Sharpe, but with the 2nd, it was way more manipulative and suited for an older croud. Just wanted to give you the heads up to watch it first, maybe, before letting the girls watch...
